Mixing through shear instabilities

چکیده
In this paper we present the results of numerical simulations of the KelvinHelmholtz instability in a stratified shear layer. This shear instability is believed to be responsible for extra mixing in differentially rotating stellar interiors and is the prime candidate to explain the abundance anomalies observed in many rotating stars. All mixing prescriptions currently in use are based on phenomenological and heuristic estimates whose validity is often unclear. Using three-dimensional numerical simulations, we study the mixing efficiency as a function of the Richardson number and compare our results with some semi-analytical formalisms of mixing.

Evolution and mixing of asymmetric Holmboe instabilities
When a stably stratified density interface is embedded in a region of strong velocity shear, hydrodynamic instabilities result. Here we generalize the stratified shear layer to allow an offset between the centre of the shear layer and the density interface. By including this asymmetry, and keeping the density interface thin with respect to the shear layer, the asymmetric Holmboe (AH) instabilit...
متن کاملMixing by shear instability at high Reynolds number
[1] Shear instability is the dominant mechanism for converting fluid motion to mixing in the stratified ocean and atmosphere. The transition to turbulence has been well characterized in laboratory settings and numerical simulations at moderate Reynolds number—it involves “rolling up”, i.e., overturning of the density structure within the cores of the instabilities. In contrast, measurements in ...
متن کاملMixing in a Moderately Sheared Salt-Fingering Layer
Mixing due to sheared salt fingers is studied by means of direct numerical simulations (DNS) of a doublediffusively unstable shear layer. The focus is on the ‘‘moderate shear’’ case, where shear is strong enough to produce Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) instability but not strong enough to produce the subharmonic pairing instability. This flow supports both KH and salt-sheet instabilities, and the objec...
متن کاملMixing in a moderately sheared, diffusively unstable layer
We study mixing in a thermohaline staircase by means of direct numerical simulations (DNS). A single saltfingering layer is modeled as a diffusively unstable shear layer of hyperbolic tangent form. Our main interest is the influence of shear, and we focus on what we call the “moderate shear” case. This is the regime where shear is strong enough to produce Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability, but ...
متن کاملShear instabilities in a tilting tube
Shear instabilities were investigated in an exchange flow in a tilting channel. The channel is connected to a freshwater reservoir at one end and a salt water reservoir at the other end. When the channel is initially horizontal, a steady two-layer flow occurs that supports symmetric Holmboe instabilities. When the channel is tilted, as in closed tilting channel experiments, shear increases and ...
